BODY TEMPERATURE
Normal body temperature is 98.6 degree Fahrenheit or 37 degree Celsius.
DEFINITION
Body temperature is the degree of heat
maintained by the body.
OR
It is the balance between the heat produced and the heat lost in the body.
The Heat regulating center in the brain is Hypothalamus.
Heat is
produced in the body continuously. Unless it is lost from the body.
The
regulation of the body temperature is maintained by two mechanisms.
1. Thermogenesis 2. Thermolysis
1. Oxidation of food-
During the metabolism of protein, carbohydrate and fat, heat
is produced as a by
product. it means when we eat food, heat is produced.
1 gm of carbohydrate
give - 4 calorie of heat
1 gm of protein give -
4 calorie of heat
1 gm of fat give - 9
calorie of heat
2. 2. Exercise –
During exercise heat is produced faster than it is eliminated
from the body. During
exercise, the blood supply to the skin is increased and
the individual feels hot.
3. Strong Emotions -
Excitement, anxiety nervousness etc. stimulate the different
organs in the body including secretary glands, due to this increased activity,
heat is produced in the body.
4. Hormonal effects
Due to increased activity of glands like thyroid gland , adrenal gland
and progesterone hormone produces
a rise in the body temperature.
5. Change in the environmental and atmospheric
condition-
High room temperature and
very High external temperature may upset the heat regulating mechanism and the
body temperature will be increased to high levels. E.g. Sun stroke, heat stroke.
WAY OF LOSING HEAT FROM THE BODY-
1. Through the skin
2. Through the lungs
3. Through the kidney
4. Through the bowel
